Champagnes to enjoy on a Special Occasion
These French Champagnes say “Je t’aime” (I Love You)
I attended a champagne tasting at The Wine Encounter and the guest winery was Nicolas Feuillatte, a champagne house from Epernay, France that I was not familiar with prior to the event. But now, I’m a fan. And if you’re into the point ratings, don’t fret because the various point-granting folks have awarded this house’s bubbly 90 or better on the points scale.
Any of Feuillatte’s champagnes would make an excellent dinner companion for your special night with your special someone. They have a bottle for all tastes, ranging brut to rosé to demi-sec. And they offer price points for those on a budget or for someone looking to splurge.
Here’s what I tasted, in order:
Brut Réserve (blue label) $28.00 – This simple, yet elegant blend is 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Meunier and has been aged for 3 years. It has a white fruit flavor of pear and apple.
Rosé Brut NV $40.00 – I typically shy away from rosés when given a choice between one and a brut or cuvee but I’m not a champagne bigot, so I remained open minded and tried it. Well my reward was a lovely strawberry flavor profile and the most delicate bubbles. It was of course salmon colored, fruity and very well balanced.
I liked this one so much I took home a bottle. My better half and I plan on having a salmon dinner and this lovely, pink bubbly with be joining us.
Brut Vintage (2004) Chardonnay (yellow label) $48.00 – This 100% Chardonnay has been aged for six years. You can definitely taste the bread dough as well as citrus and pear. This would be a great aperitif and then you could move onto a cuvee; that is if you plan on stretching out the night.
Cuvée Speciale Brut Vintage (2000) $71.00– The bottle has a sexy shape and cool blue label. The four years of aging gave off tropical fruits like banana, a hint of honey and outrageous gold effervescence. If you want to spring for a great bottle, this one is it.
Palmes d’Or Brut Vintage (1998) $127.00 –This was clearly the star of the night. Whoever designed this bottle must have taken a queue from Justin Timberlake’s “I’m bring sexy back.” This is one sexy bottle, wow! It has textured bubbles that resemble black pearls. It also feels sensual to the touch.
We tasted the 1998 and it was exceptional. After I left I thought that I should have purchased a bottle, lie it down and open it on our 25th anniversary, as it was that special. It has the ability to age nicely for a number of years. This unique champagne is lightly dosed and the blend changes slightly from vintage to vintage.
This champagne will undoubtedly get you in the mood. If you really want to pour on the sex appeal, then chill up this exquisite bubbly and your night will certainly end the way you want, if you know what I mean.
